What is Family Therapy?
Family therapy is a form of psychotherapy that focuses on the improvement of relationships and behavior in the family as a whole as well as among subgroups within the family.
As such, family therapy can help improve troubled relationships between spouses/partners, between parents and children, among children, or among other family members (grandparents, etc.).
Examples of usual goals for family therapy include:
- improving communication among family members,
- improving parenting skills,
- solving chronic family problems,
- understanding and handling special family situations (death, inheritance, significant changes)
- dealing with th impact of substance abuse or a mental illness on the whole family, and
- creating a better functioning home environment.
